In Galway the "spuds" are planted thus - The field is dug up with a spade as the ground is too rocky for a plough this is very tedious work. The land is then manured and then filled in. On account of the inconveiniency of the means of cultivating, the fields are built very small, each field or "garidhe" being only an acre and a quarter and sometimes even smaller(continues on next page)- Collector
