She happened to go to the pump for a bucket of water, the pump was about fifty yards deep, and she had a chain and a bucket always at the edge of the pump to bring up the water. She saw one end of the chain tied firmly to a stone at the top of the pump and the other end of the chain and the bucket were down in the pump.
