A prescription for rheumatism was made up by the quacks of the following: a box of mustard, a glass of turpentine, whites of two eggs, vinegar, methylated spirits of wine and croton oil.
Sore eyes were cured by going to a holy well and bathing the eye in the stream flowing from the well. A gooseberry thorn was used for curing a stye by pointing it at the eye three times.
Oatmeal and water boiled was applied to sore feet and gruel and unsalted butter was put on the backs of people afflicted with backaches.
