- The principal food long ago was the potato. It was cooked in several ways but the chief way was to boil it with bacon and cabbage. On Fridays and days of abstinence potatoes were boiled, pounded and eaten with butter. Oatmeal and Iindian meal were also used.
Cakes were made of oatmeal and baked on a griddle. Porridge was made of both oatmeal and Indian Meal. The meal before going to bed was porridge or warm milk.
