- The food the people had long ago was different from the food they have now. Their chief food was potatoes. The people were then stronger than they are now. There was no tea or coca at that time. In the morning for breakfast what they had was potatoes and they were eaten with a mugful of buttermilk. If they hadn't buttermilk the used brachan which they made from oatmeal. It was made by putting a few fistfuls of meal in boiling water and then it was boiled. When it was well boiled it was seasoned with salt. For dinner they had potatoes or stirabout. Before this the people had potatoes for breakfast, dinner and supper. When the people hadn't milk they sometimes used suchan. This was oatmeal put in water for a few days until it was sour.
