    When the Davitt family were evicted from their home they went to Lancashire.
    When Michael was twelve years of years he went to work in a cotton mill. One day while working in the mill his right arm became entangled in one of the machines and was so mangled it had to amputated. Then he joined the Fenians; he was arrested, for purchasing arms for them.
    Davitt returned to Ireland determinded to wage a ruthless war against Irish landlordism
