- Portlaw once had one of the largest cotton factories in Ireland. It was owned by a well-to-do family called the Malcomsons, who built the village of Portlaw as houses for the employees at the mill. The factory is now owned by the Portlaw Leather Co. for the manufacture of leather. The reason why the Malcomsons choose that site for the factory is because it is near the river Suir, and is convenient for shipping. The Malcomsons had large cotton plantations in South America, and during the America Civil War, they invested their money there and lost, the South American side been beaten.
