- There is a farm beside our house and on this farm there are three cows, four calves and a horse. The man who owns this farm has names on his cows. one of them is called Blackie at the other Daisy and the other Polly.
He puts out the cows in the morning after they are milked and brings them in to get milked in the evening. When he is driving them he says “gee up.” When he is putting them into the Lyre” he says “Stake up.” When he is calling them he says “Suck Suck” He keeps the cows in the Lyre at night from the 7th of October until the 17th of May.
In the Lyre there are three stakes and at each stake a cow is tied with a long chain. There is a “group.” which is like a fairly wide drain at the feet of the cows when they are standing or lying in the lyre. This is for their manure.
