   7 If there was a baby in a cradle when anyone came into the house the old people used to put the tongs across it.
   The old people would not comb their hair at night because they thought that if any of their friends were out that they would go astray.

   8 Long ago when people churned it sometimes happened that there was no butter got - no matter how long they kept churning it. It was believed that it was a witch who used to take the butter from the milk. Then a donkey's shoe would be put into the fire and heated and the witch who had been taking away the butter would come to the door and beg for mercy.

   9 There lived in Maas about three miles from Tullymore a woman named Mary Gallagher who had no butter on the milk when she churned. One evening as she was standing at her door when the cows were going into the byre she saw a hare coming out of the byre and going down in a hole near the door. Next day she went to the priest's house and told the priest. He told her to take all the water out of the well and to wash all the milking vessels with this water
