- Bread was usually made from home grown wheat and oats in olden days. The wheat and oats were ground in a quern with another hard stone. There are four querns in the Glen and one in Gurtin.
The different kinds of bread eaten in olden times were oaten bread, boxty bread, and potato cake.
The oaten bread was made out of oaten meal and hot water. Then it was put on a griddle in front of the fire until it was hard.
The potato cake was made from potatoes and flour.
The boxty bread was made (of) from raw potatoes and oaten meal. The raw potatoes had to be grated on a grater. When that was done the potatoes were put in a muslin cloth and the water was squeezed out of them. Generally enough bread was made at one time to do the house hold for a week.
