- Buying and selling was carried on in this district in the streets and in the shops and often at the chapel doors from stalls in olden times.
Salmon were sold in the streets of Ramelton at a low price from one shilling to two shillings each, and goods such as tea, flour, bread, and meal were given in exchange for fowl, woollen, knitted wear, and hides of cattle and horses which were tanned into leather. Everyone could buy this leather to have their boots made in the home. The same was done with all the clothes worn by the people in former times.
"Boot" was often used when people were buying and selling. If a man were buying a bicycle he gave an old bicycle and a pound "Boot" in exchange.
Credit was given by lots of people and also by stall holders in the street to people whom they knew and could trust.
