- One of the loveliest and most delicate of all plants that served our ancestors for bedding is My Lady's bedstraw. It got its name from the ancient tradition that this sweet flower was found among the grass and herbs that were gathered on the first Christmas Eve to make a bed for Our Lady. Holly, too, which is used as a Christian decoration was regarded as a sacred plant, for the red berries were said to represent the Holy Blood, and the prickly leaves the Crown of Thorns.
