- Long before hurley, Association football or Gaelic football was played young and old used to amuse themselves by playing caman - a game similar to the present game of hurling.
For this game they used a stick called a "caman" and a ball called a "nagg".
The caman was made out of a stout hazel sapling, the end of which, when straight, was dipped into a pot of boiling chaff. This served to turn the point.
Gorey, a rocky promontory lying near Malin Head was famous for suitable hazel saplings.
The nagg was a little ball of hard wood and it was no bigger than a golf ball.
Unlike the present hurley, the caman had no broad leaf.
If a person were playing he had to hold the caman in one hand. The nagg was so small that(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
