Church Island
When Saint Patrick was driven from Wicklow, he landed on St. Patrick's Island to the east of Skerries. Since then the island has been regarded as holy ground. About the year 550 A.D. a community of monks established themselves on the island and build a monastery, which was destroyed by the Danes in 797, and the community scattered. Several valuables were carried off in this raid including, it is said the Shrine of St. Daconna
Soon the monks came together again and restored their property. It was here, in 1124, that Malcolm O'Connacain, a man celebrated for his learning, died, and here also in 1148(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
