- Long ago people used to go to the bog and pull the rushes, bring them home, and peel them all except a thin strip to keep them strong.
Then they would cut them in small "bartens" about twelve inches long. They had a small grisset specially made for the purpose, which was made like a small boat.
In the grisset they would melt rasin and unsalted butter. In this liquid they would steep the rushes. When they would be well steeped they would leave them up to dry
