This was done to bless the bread, The old people believed it was not right to drive a knife into a cake of bread. It is recorded, that a man once plunged a knife, in derision, into a cake & that blood issued forth. ------------------------The old women, also made bread out of " [?] ". It was made in the following way. A few cupfuls of oatmeal were put to soak in some water in a crock. Some clean straw was obtained, and placed on top. A weight was then placed over all. It was left thus for at least three days, in order to get sour. it was then fit for making bread.
