- Long ago children were afraid of three dangers. It was said that if a child did anything to a weasel all the other weasels would come and cut the child's throat.A man-keeper was another animal that children were very much afraid of. They thought that he would leap into their mouths if they stood near one. If this happened the cure was to eat some very salty food, such as a salt herring and to lie on the bank of a stream. When the man-keeper would hear the water flowing in the stream he would leap out to get a drink of the water. A Lougalete (an insect about two inches long which lives in wet places) used to give great trouble to children. Children thought that if they stood on one it would go up in their feet. If this happened, the cure was to push him up further, then it was said that he would come down.
