- A general description of the old house is as follows. They generally consisted of two rooms and a kitchen. One about 12ft long and the other 14ft long. The walls were built with stones and lime mortar. The timber for the roofs, got from all the local woods, was covered with bog scraws and thatch. This thatch composed of rushes, straw or reeds. It was procured from the local lands. In almost every kitchen was an outshot or alcove in which a bed was usually placed.
The fire was always kept at the centre gable and in many cases there was no brace or flue. There was generally two small windows of four panes each and these could not be opened. In some places it was a plaited mat of rushes was in the window and a flake in the door(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
