  1. New Years day is a holiday. On that day no water is thrown out. All is kept inside in the house. On St Brigid's day it is an old custom to make crosses from rushes or straw. On St Patrick's day every Catholic wears a shamrock in his or her coat. Long ago it was an old to drown the shamrock which meant to go to the town and spend the evening drinking whiskey. On Shrove Tuesday night there is a feast held in every house. On Holy Thursday it was an old belief among the people to cut their nails and hair because they had a belief that it would take away their sins. On Good Friday people never do any work until after twelve o'clock. On Easter Sunday people eat a number of eggs and also get up early on that morning to see the sun dancing. On Whit Sunday it is not right to go near water nor to go to bed the second time. It is said that any one born on that day should be very careful not to go near water. Whit Monday is a bank holiday. Long ago on May Day people brought away butter and it is an old custom not to light the fire until we see three smokes. On St John's night there is a bonfire on every hill-top and when the bonfire is quenched some of the remains is put in the crops. The 15th August
