- Oaten bread was made in the district in olden times from corn grown locally. It is thought that querns were used in olden times
Potato-cake, Boxty-bread, and oaten meal bread were eaten.
Potato-cake was made from boiled potatoes mashed up, a handful of flour added, and kneaded into a dough and then fried (into) on a pan.
Boxty bread was made in the same way only that the potatoes were not boiled, but (boiled) peeled raw, and grated or scraped.
Oaten-meal bread was made from oat-meal with a little milk or water added when kneaded, and baked in front of the fire.
Bread was baked every day. A cross was cut on the top of the cake to enable the cake to rise better. The baking vessel was called a pot0oven(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
