- In olden times shops were not common, but they are common now. The people had to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying and selling were carried on after mass. This is still practised. The articles that were sold in this way were house articles. Money was not always given for goods. Goods were bartered in the district in olden times. Labour was given in exchange for goods. "Tick" was the getting of goods for a time without money. "Boot" was the giving of some other thing with the article in exchange for goods. In former times markets were held at forts and crossing. I know one dealer who buys feathers and rags. His name is Jack Gorman. The types of money gone out of fashion are the four shilling piece(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
