- On the first of April 1917 Father Griffin (who was afterwards murdered by the Black-and-Tans) sent John O'Dea of Gurteen, Woodlawn, Country Galway with a telegram to Dick Forde of Cloonkeen Kerrill, Colemanstown, Ballinsasloe, Country Galway. Dick Forde opened the telegram and red the contents. "It is all a joke John," said he. John came home and got a stick to beat the priest and Father Griffin had to run to escape.
