A Song
“Now as the hawthorn is in blossom,”
The following song was composed by Edward Nevin aged 75 years of Ballygreaney, Ballymacward, Woodlawn, County Galway about three years ago.
THE BOG OF CUALAC
Now as the hawthorn is in blossom
And the cuckoos in the green woods sings
The golden sun is shining
And the lark is on the wing.
I'll rise up in the morning,
I'll yoke my donkey to my cart,
And I'll go off to the bog of Cualac
To make an early start
When there I'll mount the heather
I'll strip off the coat of brown
Then will be heard the water dashing
As the big fodógues I'll throw down
I'll have a champion slanesman,
Who will cut for me a supply.
I'll have Luke and Den two young men
Upon whom I can rely
Paddy Longe who is stout and strong
Will be with me without fail,
He'll run out his barrow heaped with turf(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
