- Folklore The Great Frost.About fifty years ago the whole lake of Gortinty was covered by a thick ice. It freezed for seven weeks. The ice was from six to seven inches deep. The people drew turf across the lake. The late Robert Notley of Aughamore, Dromod drew his turf across the lake. He was drawing turf for the weeks. During that time the rivers and lakes were frozen over. The children and older folk had great fun skating out on the rivers after the seven weeks it began to thaw and the ice disappeared in a couple of hours. This tale was told to me by Pat Reynolds, Culmore, Dromod, Co. Leitrim.
