In the clong, year '98 a County Wexford blacksmith joined the ranks of the United Irishmen. One day an English captain with a party of soldiers rode out to arrest him but the captain's horse losing two shoes on the way he asked the blacksmith to nail them on again; this he did without showing any fear. Then calling loudly for a rasp he touched the bench above where he did stand the soldiers looked but no one saw the key within his hand. Then closing the door swiftly he locked the soldiers within. Then mounting on one of the soldiers horses he galloped away to warn his comrades that the English soldiers were after them.
