arrived outside the village of Kesh they saw two men dead along the road all covered with wounds. They then continued on their way but soon me a party of men who were coming to remove the bodies; on inquiring from these men they were told that the soldiers met them on the road as they were in search of food and killed them with their swords. In the same year a young boy of thirteen of fourteen years old, hungry and ill - clad snapped a cake off a standing and ran away. He was soon captured by the Yoemen, who erected a gallows in the village street - a cart I think it was - and he was hung before the eyes of the astonished people. This happened in in the village of Kesh. The foundations of many houses in each townland can still be traced. The British government gave very little assistance. America sent ship loads of Indian meal to feed the starving people. These ships were often met by English ships laden with corn leaving the Irish shore. When Dan O' Connell failed to get any relief from England this made the people very angry and caused the Fenian rising of '48.
