When a cow is thriving there is usually a rope tied from her head to her leg. This is called side-lining a cow. The cows walk into the stall one by one. Each one finds her own place in the stall and they stick their heads into the bails. Then the farmer or his servants come along close the bails and milk them and while they are milking them they generally sing a song. The cows like singing while they are being milked.
In olden times it was a custom on May Eve and St. John's Eve to burn a furze bush in the fields and while it was lighting to follow the cows around with it. It was believed that this would keep away evil eyes from them and prevent bad people from carrying away the milk.
