Very soon everyone was after the Gadaí Dubh, but he ducked him and they couldn't catch him. At the same time Jack stole the bull and drove him home to the Gadaí Dubh. When he went in he saw the Gadaí Dubh washing his legs in a pot of boiling water and picking the thorns from them. For while the Gadaí Dubh was running he had to take off his shoes and his legs were all thorns. "You are a queer man anyway," said the Gadaí Dubh. "Why?" said Jack, "haven't we the bull and twenty pounds with it." So they killed the bull and he did them for the winter. Jack left his mother in the little house near the colonel's when he was leaving, so he said he should go and see her. He went to the place but the little house wasn't there. He asked the colonel where it was and said that he knocked it and built another one for her about half a mile away
