- Saint Colmcille is traditionally connected with this district. The present Protestant Church of Drumcliffe is called after the saint. The name Columcille means "Dove of the Church." Drumcliffe seems to have held a tender place in the heart of Columba as he wrote,"Beloved to my heart, also in the west,
Drumcliffe at Culcinner's Strand."St Columcille was visiting St. Finnin who had a book of the Psalter. St. Columcille got the book to read it and wrote out a copy of it. St. Finnin wanted the copy but St. Columcille would not give it. They brought the matter to the kings but he said, "To every cow its calf and to every book its copy." St Columcille was very angry when he heard this and there was a battle fought between him and St. Finnin at Cooladrummond in the year 465 A.D. St Columcille won the battle but he killed such a number of people that he was very sorry.
