- Potatoes are grown in our farm every year. Sometimes two acres and some years only an acre and a half according as the land suits them.My father prepares the ground for the crops. No manure is put on the ground until the ground is ploughed. The spuds are the names given to the potatoes and they are sown in drills in this district. The drills are made by a plough. Two horses must draw the plough and a man to hold the handles to keep it straight and it is called a double plough. Wooden ploughs are not used now as in the times gone by.The drills are made in this way. First the horses are tackled to the plough and marks are put up in the end of the filed and the driver drives straight for them so as to have the drills straight. When the ploughman is drilling he always wants to have ten drills to the perch. When the drills are made the horses are put to the cart and the farm-yard manure is put on the drills and then it is spread and then they are rolled with a light roller to make it easy for the horses to walk on. The spuds are split in halves leaving two eyes or more in each split. Then boys gather and plant them and when they were planted bag manure(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
