Eleven families have disappeared. Some just died out and their farms were taken over by the sorrowing neighbours. Many went to America after the famine of 1846.
Our farm was called Hairstown because there was a few families of that name here but all the ruins of the old homesteads have disappeared.
The scenery from here is second to none in Ireland. We can see parts of counties of Sligo Leitrim, Roscommon, Donegal, Cavan and Mayo. The lakes to be seen are Loughs Key, Arrow, Melia, Skean and Derrynachologue. The nearest river is the Feorish which is a tributary of the Shannon. The mountains consist of the Bralieve, the Curlew the Ox, Knocknarea, Ben Gulban, Donegal, Slieve-an-iaran and the Slievebán at Strokestown.
The important places near here are (1) Shancough where St Patric established his first church in Connaught; (2) Dugary, culminating point of Moytura where St Patrick addressed a meeting of pagan nobility; (3) Many Giant's graves including |Balor's which is the only one of triangular shape; (4) See Lughaidh where Lugh of the long hands lived (5) Kilhare where King Eocaidh is(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
