  1. Long ago the old people could tell the signs of the weather by looking at the sun or moon or at the sky.
When the rainbow appears in the sky it is the sign of storm.
When the swallow or the crow is flying low it is the sign of storm.
If there are black clouds in the sky or if the soot is falling from the chimney it is also the sign of rain.
Blue blazes in the fire or if the goats come down from the mountains or if the smoke is going up straight out of the chimney it is also a sign of rain.
Here is an old ryhme which old people used to say if there was an appearance of rain. -
The Hollow Wind begins to blow
The clouds hang back, the Glass is Low
The soot falls down, the Spaniels sleep,
The spiders from their cob-webs creep.
Last night the sun went late to bed,
the moon in halo's hid her head,
The brooding shepherd heaves a sigh,
To see a rainbow span the sky.
