  2. In former times people seldom wore shoes except on certain occasions, for instance, to Mass and to town. When they were going in a journey they carried their shoes in their hands. When they came near the end of the journey the stopped to put on their shoes. Therefore shoes lasted a long time in those days. Also during this time the same boots were worn by more than one member of the family. The children of those times never wore a shoe either in Winter or in Summer.
