The time of the famine the landlords in the district formed a union and hired the poor people for small wages making roads and other works.
The following story relates an incident of the famine.
A road was making at Glenageenty, Catsleisland, and all the poor people were working there. One evening as two men were coming home from work - they sat down by the roadside, tired and hungry. The following morning they were found dead by the roadside, covered with snow. - A lot of stories are told about the famine of 1847. These were very poor times and the majority of the people were very poor. The most of the people at that time had to live on potatoes and milk. At that time the people used to grow a lot of corn and they used have a lot of cattle (?) but these had to be sold and the money had to be given to the landlords for rent.
