- There was an old hedgeschool at Lalisheen, Beaufort Co. Kerry. It was a small mudwall hut and the master and his pupils used to be inside in it, when the weather used to be wet. They used to go out under the open air if the day were fine. A man named Michael Mack used to be teaching there. He used to teach English, writing, and a little Irish, and Arithmetic. The pupils used to write on slates, with pointed pieces of stone. The scholars used to pay him three shillings and sixpence a quarter, or if they could not pay him the money, he used to get his board and lodgings in their houses for some length of time. My grandfather spent two or three years going to that school, over ninety years ago.
It was my father, Tim Breen of Lahard, Beaufort that told me about school. - There was a night school held at the [Uall?] after the famine in Dan Shea's house. Dan Shea was the teacher there. He was also a teacher in Faha School. About fifteen pupils used attend there.
