  1. Long ago the people had beds in the kitchen they were called settle beds. They were used as seats during the day. The walls of the houses were built of mud, and the floors were made of clay.
    They thatched the houses with wheaten straw. They used turf and sods for the fire. They had small windows with iron bars outside and they had no glass. When night came they put bags of chaff in the windows.
    When a person sold any animals, robbers might come and try to get their money.
    In those days the people did not buy coal because they had plenty of turf.
