  1. We have six cows, two horses, two pigs, no sheep and twelve calves at our home. We keep a cat and dog for use about the house.
The cows have names such as Lily, Peggy and Primrose. The calves have names such as Paul, Paddy, Sheila and Bridy. When we drive the cows in or out of a field we shout ‘Row; how; how;`’. When we are calling them we say ‘Cheo; Cheo; Cheo.” The cow house is a stone building. It has a slated roof. It holds four cows. It is called the “byre.” There is a partition between every two cows. The cows are tied by the neck with a chain. This chain is connected to a round ring which runs on an iron stake so that the cow has plenty of freedom. Each cow has her own trough and manger. A channel runs down the byre immediately behind the cows to catch the manure. When milking the cows tail is tied to her leg. She is brushed and her udder is washed to keep the dirt from falling into the milk.
