- In olden times houses were built of clay, mud and stones, with long sticks for rafters.
They were thatched with straw and rushes. The rushes were grown locally.
There was a bed in the kitchen beside the fire in every house. It was called a settle-bed. It was a seat by day and a bed by night. Some of the people had their fires in the middle of the floor and a hole in the roof for the smoke to go out. Sometimes rain would come down and put them out and wind would blow the smoke sparks through the house and would put the house on fire.
They burned sticks and turf on the fire. They used rushlights and candles to show them light at night. Candles were made locally in the district long ago.- Bailitheoir
