- In the year 1839 a storm broke over our country. It knocked houses and trees were torn up by the roots. There were corn-stacks and hay-ricks blown all over the country. Some of the wall of the houses were sufficiently strong to stand the storm but the roofs were blown off. People on the highlands died from cold or wounds from houses falling on them. Cattle were killed by houses or trees falling on them. It is said that the wind came from the Lough Allen direction. The people of the North-west still call it the Lough Allen wind.
