A mixture of super phosphate and sulphate of ammonia is sown by some farmers on top of the "seed" before it is covered over again with soil. This is done by running the large plough down the alleys thus forking the soil over on to the potatoes.
The local people help each other a great deal in the putting in of this crop. If a farmer has not got a horse his neighbours go and helps him to put in the crop. The farmer, who has been helped, then goes and helps the man, or men, who helped him.
About a fortnight after the potatoes have been put in the lumps are knocked off the tops of the drills into the alleys.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
