  1. There are no fairies in this country now. They left a number of years ago and went to some other country. They used to live in the forts and they wore red clothes. They were small men and they never came out of the forts in the day time. They came out at night and they danced and played music. Once upon a time there was a man named Pat Murphy and he ploughed a field before his house. That night the fairies came and they took the straw that was in the barn out to the street and it went in again. About a week later these same people had a child. One night the fairies came and took it and left another one in its place. This fairy child never stopped crying when the people were in the house. One day they had a carpenter working in the house. The others were out-side and the child stopped crying and it asked the carpenter would he like to hear a tune, He said he would. Then the fairy child took a fiddle from under the pillow and played a tune. Then the child heard
