- There are many signs of rain which we know around here: When it is going to rain the wind blows from the south & west and the smoke blows down the chimney. The sun, when setting, becomes a yellow colour: The swallows fly low because the flies are near the ground: the midges are another sign of rain as the nip you to get food for their supper as the are so small and weak and cannot stand out in the rain. Another sign of rain is when the cat scratches sticks. We cannot understand this but it is a sure sign. Sometimes the dog can tell us when it is going to rain by eating grass or by sleeping by the fire. It is said that when it is going to rain that it makes everything dull : Frogs, as a rule can tell you when rain is coming because they change their colour from yellow to a rusty brown and when it is going to be good they change it back again to brown. Worms come up to the top of the ground because they would be drowned underneath as the rain would go down in the holes that they make. The cricket's chirp sharply by the turf fires only when rain is coming:(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
