- There was a school in Beggar about the year 1838 in a thatched house. A Mr Campion taught in it. The pupils had to bring a penny a week and a sod of turf. The house still stands. I know a man who went to it and he is over eighty years.
There was another in Donoughmore in which Mr John Byrne lives in at present. Mr Ceaser taught in it. Reading writing and Arithmetic and the rule of three were taught. Some of his pupils afterwards attended at Johnstown to a Mr Bergin grandfather of the present Thomas Bergin. He was a Latin teacher and afterwards attended St Kierans College to study for the priesthood.
In 1890 the late most Rev Doctor Brownrigg founded a secondary school for the boys in part of Rockfords Hotel now Mr Shearman's. The professor in charge was the Rev(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
