- The year of the Great Famine 1846-47 in Ireland,my grandfather was a little boy and lived in Clones. It affected the district very much. Many people died and many emigrated.
There are ruins of dwelling houses to be seen yet in Clones, that were occupied the time of the famine. It was the bad weather that brought the blight on the potatoes.
The people took porridge instead, which was made out of yellow meal that was shipped in here from England to save the people from death. There was a plague of sickness after the famine.People still talk about the famine.
In the Ballybay district, there is a house called the "Boiling House" about a quarter of a mile outside the town, which they used to make yellow meal porridge for the people.- Bailitheoir
