The weights were packed either in saw dust or bran, I dont remember which, and the distance was from one end of the mill to the other where there was a line marked out. James Rynn was wearing a new pair of very heavy shoes. The shoes burst on his feet under the weight and the wager was lost into the bargain because when he crossed the line he thought he had won and he let the load drop. It fell inside the line marked and the man putting up the wager refused to pay when the load was not carried across the mark. There were many men present and the decision
