- Local Poets
There is a poet still living in this district. His name is Jim Higgins. No stories are told as to how he got the gift or verse making. One of his poems he composed was "The Fourpenny Beef." It is said that he composed this poem on account of all that were getting the dole and the beef. He composes his poems in English. He is a tradesman and is at present working in a house in Aughrim. No great power is attributed to this poet. He can read and write. These are the following lines I heard about the "Fourpenny Beef."
The Fourpenny Beef is a great relief
And tis my belief it will come cheaper
When you get enough of this powerful stuff,
'Twill put a bone in your neck, and through the fields you'll caper.
Your throats wont be swollen they will be so well oiled.
And it will do your heart good whether roasted or boiled.
Your troubles twill vanish 'tis my firm belief
When you lay back your ears at the Fourpenny Beef
Not a tooth nor a tonsil will trouble ye more
The microbes and germs it will kill by the score(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
