- Up to about forty years ago, there were many craftsmen in this district, but the crafts are not carried on now by their descendants. The principal crafts were weaving, woodwork, metal work, shoemaking and thatching.
There is a number of old thatchers still in this district, but as the number of thatched houses is becoming less, the thatchers are becoming scarce also. At present the craft is carried on by an old man in Ballygorey named Michael Holden John Merry of Curlody John Brennan from Ballytarsney, and a man named OKeeffe from Dournane. As a sign that the craft is dying out, none of these men's sons are taking up the trade.
Up to about fifteen years ago, shoemaking was carried on in Mooncoin by a man named James Howley, but none of his sons are engaged in the trade now.
A school in Old Luffany, now converted into a house, was once a forge. The smith who worked there was named Larry White, and he carried on his trade there, up to about twenty years ago.
