- There were very few shops in olden times. The people had to go three or four miles to the nearest town to make their purchases. Buying and selling were always carried on after Mass. When the people came out to the church gate, they were stopped by the men and women with cars full of goods. Selling at the church gate is hardly ever done now, except something was on in the locality.
Money was not always given for goods, sometimes articles were exchanged for them. Labour was often given as payment for goods.
The fourpenny bit of silver, and the five shilling piece are now gone out of use. A farthing is hardly ever used in this locality.- Bailitheoir
