One time there lived a poor man, who had three sons. When he was dying he had nothing to give them but a big tree. To the first he gave what was crooked and straight, to the second he gave what was rotten and round, and to the third he gave what was under the ground. When he was dead neither of his sons owned the tree. So they went to a solicitor to decide the case. The solicitor said, "Which ever of you is the smartest will get the tree. The first said that he could keep a hare in a field with his big toe tied to his button hole. The second said that he could pick a bag of feathers off a hill the windiest day ever came. The third said that he could shoe a race-horse galloping. The solicitor said he could not decide the case, and he said which ever of them would be the laziest would get it. So the first said that if he was at the cold side of a ditch he would be too lazy to go to the warm side.
