- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)she usually builds it in a sgeat or in a hole in a ditch. It is round in shape and not open at the top at all. There is a hole in it on the sheltery side, for the bird to go in and out. It looks and is a small home for the 16 or 17 eggs and the mother bird. This is the hatching nest but the cock also makes a similar nest for himself near it. This nest is made with the same care only it has no lining inside or soft material.
They rear a large family and are very busy all the summer looking for food.
The cruel custom of killing the wren and putting the dead bird in a bush and boys with blackened faces and ribald dresses going from house to house, singing verses and looking for money on St Stephens Day is fast dying out in this part of our Island homes
It was not an Irish custom at best and it was most degrading because the money so received usually went as it came, in a bad cause namely, drink.- Faisnéiseoir
